Students from Sunset School, a special education facility run by the Kern Superintendent of Schools, will have the time of their lives on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the annual Kern Kiwanis Club sponsored "Take A Kid Fishing" Derby.

More than 40 students will participate in this half day event set to take place at Mirror Lake in Hart Park; it will start at approximately 9:30 a.m. as students arrive.  More than 60 members of Kern Kiwanis Club and members of the east Bakersfield High School and Ridgeview High School KIWINS service clubs will help them get organized, bait the hooks, counsel them on the finer points of casting, what to do when you "hook the big one" and how to reel your catch in.  If need be, club members will wade into the water to retrieve fish, untangle lines and re-set hooks.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. Kiwanis members will put on a barbecue lunch for the students, members and guests to round out the day's events.  The day ends around 1 p.m. when students board their bus, along with their "catch" for the return trip home.
